10 Things That Require Zero Talent

Ten Things That Require Zero Talent

INSPIRATION FROM AN ALL BLACK

This was posted on All Blacks Liam Messam’s Instagram last week, and it was just what I needed. I have always felt inadequate and back in University, a good friend of mine told me that I “try too hard”. I then realised what for me was “giving my all” was actually viewed as overcompensating. Over the years I also felt that I was overcompensating for my lack of talent or qualifications by driving myself to exhaustion to please people. I was not only overcompensating I was also a people pleaser! Because I was scared that people will finally realise that I have no talent, no skills. That is why I can’t accept compliments because it just doesn’t ring true for me.

10 Things That Require Zero Talent

WHEREVER YOU ARE IS GOOD ENOUGH (FOR NOW)

When I look at this list, it reminded me that even if I felt I had no talent or lack the experience as long as I have these traits I will reach a level of skill that I will one day be proud of. I know I won’t ever have the chance to be a world-class athlete (it’s super late for that) or become a whiz at programming (my brain cells were not made for that) but wherever I am right now, whatever it is that brings me joy and yet challenges me at the same time, these are the things that I should apply to optimize my potential.

My goal every single day is to improve on my interests. Whether it be writing or lettering or doing crafts, I want to become good, then better and then best and the cycle never ends. I challenged myself to live creatively this year, and though it has been a hard uphill climb since I wasn’t born with the skills that I wanted I will still do my best. Because my goal  has always been progress over perfection.

Since the original post was just written on a dry-erase board, I used my brush pen and Photoshop to make it more my style. When I posted the unedited version on Instagram, someone asked me how I would define talent, and this quote from Seth Godin was my answer:

“Wouldn’t it be great to be gifted? In fact… It turns out that choices lead to habits. Habits become talents. Talents are labeled gifts. You’re not born this way, you get this way.”

– Seth Godin
